Area Manager - Material Handling

JOB PURPOSE:  The primary duties include; inventory control, shipping / receiving, warehousing, kitting, and distribution of materials to efficiently support an OEM assembly plant. In this role, you will provide the leadership and direction to the department to insure that internal and external customer needs are supported effectively in an efficient, safe, timely, and cost effective manner.

  • Material Handling Shift Managers and Supervisors


Main Duties:

  • Manage all receiving, distribution, and warehousing functions to maintain smooth flow of purchased and manufactured products.
  • The ongoing optimization of warehouse design, definition of functional requirements, and the applications of resources.
  • Manage warehouse value added services (i.e., kitting and light sub-assembly) for internal and external distribution.
  • Work with logistics personnel to ensure a balanced arrival of inbound freight.
  • Analyze daily reports and develop/implement recommendations for improved efficiency.
  • Develop production line delivery sequence plans to optimize assembly production support.
  • Schedule, motivate and lead a team of 100+ material handling personnel.
  • Review and evaluate internal inventory requirements to optimize the levels based on production requirement, size of parts, and part cost.
  • Support the development of returnable packaging to reduce landfill waste and improve total cost.



  • Reporting of material handling caused material shortages.
  • Inventory accuracy in controlled warehouses and line locations.
  • Turnaround time for parts received to storage location.
  • Parts moved per material handling man-hour.
  • Over-time required as a percentage of standard hours worked.


Background Requirements:

  • Management of a 50+ person team supporting multiple assembly lines and internal manufacturing work centers.
  • Management of warehouse and materials flow in a large multi-building OEM campus.
  • Must have at least five years management experience in quality, engineering, manufacturing, and / or materials position, preferably in a large scale complex OEM or tier 1 supplier environment.



Position Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Four-year business / engineering degree highly preferred.
  • Comprehensive manufacturing working knowledge.
  • Exposure to Warehouse Management Systems (WMS).
  • Six Sigma and/or Lean Manufacturing implementation experience.
  • Project management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Team building & motivational skills.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills; - Attention to details and follow-through are required.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office suite software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and MS Project.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and analytical skills are critical.
