Job Title: Maintenance Manager

Department: Maintenance                                  

Classification: Exempt                                    

Reports to: Plant Manager

 

Job Summary

Provide leadership and management support for maintenance and tool crib departments. Responsible for the safe and cost-effective maintenance, repair, and/or replacement of plant equipment, facilities, and systems, ensuring maximum production quantity and quality, while supporting the policies, goals, and objectives of the company.  Develops and drives PM/TPM objectives throughout the plant to optimize production efficiencies and has implementation and management responsibilities for LOTO for the plant and facilities.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Member of Plant Leadership Team.
  • Participate in objective setting, plan development, and performance review of plant performance.
  • Initiates implements and manages the plant maintenance program based on best practices with an emphasis on planning/scheduling and preventive/predictive maintenance.
  • Monitors the use and inventories of spare parts, maintenance supplies, and equipment and initiates reordering when necessary.
  • Oversees the maintenance and repairs of maintenance shop equipment and facilities.
  • Establishes and maintains a computerized maintenance management system for tracking work orders, spare parts, and maintenance history of plant equipment.
  • Prepares reports, analyzes data, and makes recommendations for improving plant operations and solving maintenance-related problems.
  • Supervises plant maintenance personnel.
  • Ensures that maintenance technicians are adequately trained, equipped, and motivated so that the maintenance program can be accomplished in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
  • Communicates regularly with all maintenance technicians, both individually and as a group, to ensure good two-way communication concerning maintenance issues.
  • Assists with the selection and hiring of maintenance personnel.
  • Maintains and updates operating and training manuals for the maintenance department.
  • Ensures that all maintenance technicians are trained on the most updated version of the operating procedures.
  • Monitors operation of plant equipment and systems.
  • Initiates and carries out projects that improve efficiency and/or reduce operating costs utilizing the current continuous improvement system within the plant.
  • Tracks analyzes and improves key maintenance parameters such as asset utilization, maintenance cost, PM compliance, schedule compliance, etc.
  • Maintains safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures city, county, state, and federal regulations relating to the maintenance department are always met.
  • Directs, maintains, and enforces the safety program for the maintenance department; reviews safety records to uphold standards of maximum safety for all maintenance technicians.
  • Communicates directly with the operations department to coordinate maintenance and repair work in process areas.
  • Implements programs and procedures required to ensure plant cleanliness and 5S compliance plant-wide and within own department.
  • Assists with site capital planning and implementing plant improvements and expansions.

 

Safety Responsibilities

Employees/temporary employees are responsible for individual compliance with all safety rules, policies and procedures.  Employee/temporary employee responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Comply with all safety rules, policies and procedures.
  • Report any unsafe practices and/or conditions to their supervisor.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and report any defective PPE.
  • Report all near-misses, incidents, injuries, illnesses, including mobile equipment or property damage.
  • Participation in the site Safety and Health Program.

 

Essential skills

Education

  • Minimum of an Associate degree from a two-year College in a related technical field or certificate or diploma from a trade school in a related field and five years’ experience in the maintenance and/or operation of a manufacturing facility or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred Bachelor of Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degrees with 5-7 years as a manufacturing engineer or industrial engineer and direct or indirect supervisory responsibilities.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 5-7 years in a plant maintenance or manufacturing engineering role with direct or indirect supervisory responsibilities.
  • Prefer LEAN certification with working knowledge of implementing lean in a maintenance organization or within a manufacturing plant.
  • Working knowledge of the mechanical and electrical aspects of plant-based maintenance; rudimentary skills in TPM and Reliability Engineering are preferred.
  • Extensive experience with repairs and maintenance of manufacturing equipment in a steel fabrication environment.
  • Ability to listen and clearly communicate both verbally & in written format laterally across peers and vertically up and down the organization within the plant.
  • Proven ability to plan and organize/manage medium to large projects to a successful conclusion.
  • Ability to analyze maintenance and machine data and develop tactical and strategic recommendations to the plant management team on decisions concerning equipment, maintenance processes, and plant facility expenditures.
  • Customer-focused and can collaborate/influence operations/other departments to successfully execute critical equipment projects or activities within the needed timeline.
  • Willingness to take initiative and drive projects or activities to a conclusion.
  • Work effectively within a leadership team and act as a team player within the organization.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibility

This position is responsible for leading, developing, coaching, and mentoring a functional team of 10 to 15 plant hourly associates.  Leads and inspires cross-training and development of associates and workforce effectiveness.  

 

Work Environment

This job generally operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The employee is also exposed to a variety of extreme conditions in the work environment. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this job.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and reach with hands or arms. The employee must be able to stand for up to twelve hours per day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

The employee must wear personal protective equipment (i.e. eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, gloves, sleeves, etc.)

 

Travel

Minimal travel is expected for this position.
