About the Job: 

 

The Research & Development Shop Manager is responsible for the overall management of the R&D Shop, including the leadership of a team of technicians, machinists, and engineering support staff. This role emphasizes safety, efficiency, and effective project management. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and oversee the team of technicians, machinists, and engineering support staff in their daily operations. 

  • Facilitate monthly performance discussions and provide continuous feedback to team members. 

  • Prioritize engineering requests and ensure projects are completed on time and efficiently. 

  • Monitor project progress and address any issues or delays promptly. 

  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, production support, and marketing teams to ensure smooth workflow on joint initiatives. 

  • Procure and manage the equipment, tools, suppliers, and parts necessary for safe and efficient shop operations. 

  • Oversee the repair and maintenance of all machinery, tools, and equipment in the R&D shop. 

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies, providing training to foster a safe and clean work environment. 

  • Organize and manage storage areas for parts, projects (both past and present), equipment, and machinery across various R&D facilities. 

  • Assist in sorting and organizing parts from previous projects and returned customer products requiring engineering evaluation. 

  • Support R&D facility design, remodeling, or expansion projects as needed. 

  • Identify and implement effective procedures, systems, and processes to maintain a safe, efficient, and effective R&D shop, prioritizing people over processes. 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate and guide a team effectively. 

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, capable of managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. 

  • A solid understanding of mechanical systems and correct repair procedures. 

  • Prior experience in a technical role, such as technician or mechanic. 

  • A strong desire to learn 

  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to work and problem-solving. 

  • Reliable, with a proven track record of following through on commitments. 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex tasks and concepts. 

  • People-smart: An active listener who responds effectively to team needs.
